Netflix Inc. delivered its 1 billionth DVD over the weekend, marking another milestone in the Internet rental service's evolution from a peculiar dot-com to a marquee attraction in millions of homes.

It took Netflix nearly 7 1/2 years to mail out 1 billion DVDs -- about seven months less than it took McDonald's Corp. to sell 1 billion hamburgers after opening its first restaurant in April 1955.

To commemorate the occasion, Netflix is awarding a lifetime subscription to the Helotes, Texas, customer who received the 1 billionth DVD shipped from one of the Los Gatos-based company's 42 distribution centers nationwide.

In the lead image above, an orange (red), green and near-UV colour filter composite image of Mars is shown; the UV channel (the blue color) has been enhanced. The enhanced UV signal clearly shows the presence of the cloud system covering most of the Martian disk. 
 
 
 

WASHINGTON (AP) Many Iraq war soldiers, veterans and their families are not getting needed psychological help because a stressed military's mental health system is overwhelmed and understaffed, a task force of psychologists found.

I ended up spending 16 hours in the Miami-Dade County Jail, a rat-infested institution that is more Abu Ghraib than American Grade.

The incident took place Tuesday night after leaving the media circus in Fort Lauderdale and driving down to Miami to continue working on a journalitic project about the ongoing transition affecting Biscayne Blvd. This wasn't for People Magazine, but my heart was at least into this project.

No one knows who started El Club Danzante, a Clovis dance club that's been meeting since World War II.
One member says it's an old Italian club. Another member argues that "danzante" is a Spanish word.

They're both right because danzante means dancer in Spanish and the verb dance in Italian.
